Residence and work permit for non-EU/EEA citizens

As a Non-EU/EEA citizen:
- You are required to hold a residence and work permit
- You are required to hold a work permit before you start to work (with a very few exceptions)
- You might need a visa to enter into Denmark and the Schengen-area as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands
- A residence and work permit is required to work and conduct research in Greenland or at the Faroe Islands.
- Accompanying family members are also required to hold residence permits
- Working illegally can lead to serious consequences for you and the university.

PhD Students
General conditions
You are required to hold a work and residence permit to be a PhD Student in Denmark and you need to have it before you begin your PhD studies.
The International Staff Unit (ISU) will initiate the application process for your residence and work permit.
In order to have your residence and work permit timely processed by the immigration authorities, please act promptly as required in the application process or by ISU.
Your residence and work permit can only be applied via the PhD Student-scheme for either enrolled, or enrolled and employed PhD students.
Please note that you have the right to work maximum 20 hours per week on top of your work as a PhD student.
Please also note that non-Nordic citizens are required to hold a residence and work permit to work or conduct research in Greenland or the Faroe Islands. Special conditions apply and the processing time is 3 months. Contact ISU for further information.
