Residence and work permit for EU/EEA citizens

Residence and work permit requirements for EU/EEA citizens

As an EU/EEA citizen:

  • You do not require a residence and work permit to live and work in Denmark.
  • You require a residence and work permit to work and conduct research in Greenland or at the Faroe Islands.
  • You must obtain an EU registration certificate and register with the public authorities if you are staying in Denmark for more than 90 days.

EU/EEA citizens can reside freely in Denmark for up to three months without registering with the public authorities. If you are searching for a job, you can stay in Denmark for up to six months.

If you expect to stay in Denmark for longer than the three or six month limit described above, you must register for an EU residence certificate (registration certificate).

Once you have obtained an EU registration certificate, you must register for a Danish CPR number at the local municipality.

Non-Nordic citizens are required to obtain a residence and work permit to work or conduct research in Greenland or at the Faroe Islands. Special conditions apply and the processing time for a work permit is three months. Please contact the International Staff Unit for further information if this applies to you.

Bringing your family

If your family members are EU/EEA-citizens, they can apply for an EU Registration Certificate in their capacity as accompanying family members to you.

If your family members are Nordic citizens, they can enter and reside in Denmark as Nordic Citizens.

If they are non-EU citizens, they can apply for a residence permit in their capacity as accompanying family members to you based on your EU citizenship.
