competence development
Management performance and development review (LUS)
The annual management performance and development review (LUS) is an opportunity for joint dialogue and reflection between a manager and their superior on the manager’s well-being, motivation, competencies and development. It is an opportunity to take stock and look beyond day-to-day operations and view the manager’s task completion in a larger context.
How to conduct a management performance and development review
- 1
Preparation
- Inform the management team about LUS, including this year's special focus.
- Consider how the leaders contribute to the realisation of policies, strategies, and visions in their practice.
- Send invitations and LUS-material to the managers well in advance.
- Prepare your feedback.
- 2
Dialogue
- Align expectations: Which dimensions do you start with, and what else is important?
- Use the questions to create a common understanding of the manager's situation and development potential.
- Prioritise the most relevant dimensions.
- 3
Competence development plan
- Complete the competency development plan together.
- Set aside at least 15 minutes and think broadly about competence development, not just formal education.
- Be realistic with 1-2 concrete future goals.
- Finish by evaluating the LUS-concept and discussing any improvements for next time.
- 4
Follow-up
- Consider giving the management team overall feedback after the LUS meetings on common trends.
- If necessary, conduct status interviews as a follow-up to the competence development plan.
- Share the 1-2 agreed future goals with the management team and make agreements on follow-up.
