Management performance and development review (LUS)

The annual management performance and development review (LUS) is an opportunity for joint dialogue and reflection between a manager and their superior on the manager’s well-being, motivation, competencies and development. It is an opportunity to take stock and look beyond day-to-day operations and view the manager’s task completion in a larger context.

How to conduct a management performance and development review

  1. 1

    Preparation

    • Inform the management team about LUS, including this year's special focus.
    • Consider how the leaders contribute to the realisation of policies, strategies, and visions in their practice.
    • Send invitations and LUS-material to the managers well in advance.
    • Prepare your feedback.
  2. 2

    Dialogue

    • Align expectations: Which dimensions do you start with, and what else is important?
    • Use the questions to create a common understanding of the manager's situation and development potential.
    • Prioritise the most relevant dimensions.
  3. 3

    Competence development plan

    • Complete the competency development plan together.
    • Set aside at least 15 minutes and think broadly about competence development, not just formal education.
    • Be realistic with 1-2 concrete future goals.
    • Finish by evaluating the LUS-concept and discussing any improvements for next time.
  4. 4

    Follow-up

    • Consider giving the management team overall feedback after the LUS meetings on common trends.
    • If necessary, conduct status interviews as a follow-up to the competence development plan.
    • Share the 1-2 agreed future goals with the management team and make agreements on follow-up.
